If you’re (sometimes) grumpy and you know it clap you hands
Come on, sing it with me
If you’re (sometimes) grumpy and you know it clap your hands
If you’re (sometimes) grumpy and you know it clap your hands
If you’re (sometimes) grumpy and you know it and you really ought to show it
If you’re (sometimes) grumpy and you know it clap your hands
Lets be honest for a minute. Being a teenager is tough. This is a crazy time of life for you. Put your hormones, friends, school, work, family, extra curriculars, church callings and hobbies in a blender and that is your life at the moment. Then add the pressure of trying to figure out what you want to do when you graduate high school, we totally understand that it is all a bit overwhelming sometimes and sometimes you will be grumpy.
Well guess what? That is totally normal!
Let’s break down the science for a bit. Sometime during your teenage years, you will his puberty, which is just the awkward word for the hormonal changes that are going on in your body. This change is when a section of the brain, the hypothalamus, start producing a new hormone your body isn’t used to. In girls, it’s called estrogen. All of a sudden your body is flooded with this weird new hormone and every other hormone in your body basically freaks out. So it really isn’t your fault you are happy, then suddenly sad. Your hormones are running around like mad. It also means that it is totally normal to sometimes be grumpy because your body is still figuring things out.
Now that we know that there is a reason why your emotions are a bit all over the place, what next?
Emotions are a normal part of life and it is actually very healthy to experience a range of emotions. We need not be ashamed of our emotions, and learning to express our emotions is one of the best things we can do.
It is ok not to be happy all the time. It is ok to acknowledge our emotions because they are a very real thing that you are feeling. Like hot and cold, emotions are felt and experienced in a different way by everyone and right now, you will be experiencing emotions a different way every time they appear.
Next time you are unhappy, take a moment to acknowledge why you are feeling the way you are. You are not your emotions so don’t let emotions dictate who you are. Take a deep breath and find the source of your upset. Is it stress, anxiety, someone making you angry? By acknowledging your emotions, you are stopping your emotions controlling you.
Now that you know what is causing you to be grumpy, it is time to remove it from your life. There are obviously some things you can’t completely get rid of (yes you have to do your maths homework), but you can take a step away from it until you are in a better headspace to process it.
If you need to walk away from a conversation, task or situation, then do it. It takes lots of courage, but you are a strong person that deserves to be happy.
By removing the thing that is making you grumpy, you now have room in your life for something that makes you happy. Time to take a walk, have a mini dance party or treat yourself to a small sweet treat.
Emotions multiply, so if you dwell in your grumpy mood, you will stay in your grumpy mood. So if you are sometimes grumpy and you know it, you are on the right track to being happy and loving it.
