Each of us will experience trials that seem unbearable. While I was recently feeling this way, I remembered a story I’d heard last month:
A boy was in the midst of an overwhelming trial and exclaimed, “I can’t do it!” To his surprise, a man nearby replied, “You’re right – you can’t.” Then he said something that changed the young man’s way of thinking, as well as mine: “You can’t do it, but He can.”
You can’t do it, but He can.
After recalling this story, I chose to focus on my Savior instead of the situation I was in. I thought, I may be unable to do it on my own, but I can do it with Him. With all my might, I prayed for the strength to persevere. What happened next can only be described as a miracle. I not only felt His love surround me, but I truly felt that He blessed me with power beyond my own to make it through what I was facing.
I’ve changed the following verses slightly to create a poem out of scriptures about this experience. Hope you enjoy it. 🙂
“When [I] saw the wind boisterous, [I] was afraid;
And beginning to sink, [I] cried, saying, ‘Lord, save me.’
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and
Caught [me], and said unto [me], ‘O thou of little faith,
Wherefore didst thou doubt?’” (Matthew 14:30-31)
“‘My [daughter], peace be unto thy soul;
Thine adversity and thine afflictions
Shall be but a small moment;
And then, if thou endure it well,
[I] shall exalt thee on high;
Thou shalt triumph over all thy foes.’” (D&C 121:7-8)
“And it came to pass that after I had
Prayed and labored with all diligence,
The Lord said unto me, ‘I will grant
Unto thee according to thy desires,
Because of thy faith.’” (Enos 1:12)
“‘If [you] humble [yourself] before me,
And have faith in me, then will I
Make weak things become strong unto [you].’” (Ether 12:27)
“‘I will…ease the burdens which are put
Upon your shoulders, that even you
Cannot feel them upon your [back]…
This will I do that ye may
Stand as [a witness] for me…
That ye may know of a surety that
I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.’” (Mosiah 24:14)
And now I know that “I can do all things
Through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13)
So here it is, the key to getting through trials:
Focus on Christ and He will give you strength beyond your own to persevere.
This knowledge has helped me so much. Amidst challenging moments, I call upon Christ, and in His infinite love and mercy, He offers me heavenly help. I stand as a witness that He truly comforts His people during their afflictions.
My dear reader, if you’re having a difficult time, please know that He is waiting with outstretched arms to help you. As you sincerely strive to come closer to Him, I promise He will strengthen you. I pray that you may see the Savior in the storm you’re walking through. You can do all things through Christ. 🙂
How have you felt the Savior give you strength beyond your own? How do you apply the scriptures to your life?
P.S. While writing this, I was reminded of this article, which I absolutely LOVED. Christ thought of us while He was suffering, and it helped Him get through His difficult times. Similarly, as we focus on Him during our trials, we will receive heavenly help. This talk is incredible as well! 🙂
