Courage and Kindness

The other day, I was eating dinner with my family at a restaurant and remarked how much I liked the pretty floral skirt and sparkly shoes that the lady sitting at a table across from us had on. Then my dad said, “Why don’t you tell her that?” As a typically introverted individual, I was surprised to hear this suggestion. Tell a stranger I liked her outfit? No way!  The conversation went on, but I continued thinking about my dad’s words. I don’t want to interrupt her discussion with her friends…should I actually say something?  Once my family and I finished our meals, we stood up to leave. I hesitated for a moment, thinking how it would be easier to walk away without saying anything to this lady. However, something inside me held me back, and I knew I should give the compliment. Walking up to her table, I said with a smile, “Excuse me…I just wanted to say how much I love your outfit.” With that simple sentence, her face lit up and she replied, “Thank you! How sweet of you!” As we waved goodbye to each other, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy. Although I was initially reluctant to speak up, I was very glad I did.

How many times have we had the thought to do or say something kind for someone, then haven’t acted upon that prompting? I know I have missed out on many opportunities to make someone smile just because I was too shy to say something. Since that experience, however, I have been striving to actually share the kind thoughts I have about those around me. And how wonderful it feels to brighten someone’s day!! 🙂 Writing about this reminded me of one of my very favorite quotes from one of my very favorite movies (the live-action version of Cinderella): “Have courage and be kind.” What a beautiful message! I believe kindness is one of the greatest attributes we can possess. May we always have the courage to be kinder to those around us. 🙂

How can you brighten someone’s day today?

P.S. The lovely photo of flowers was taken by my sister outside of the Oakland Temple. 🙂
