City of Stars (and Circles)

I was humming “City of Stars” and thinking about what to write for this article when I suddenly remembered a book I hadn’t read in a long time – You Are Special by Max Lucado.

Have you read it? It’s a children’s book with a beautiful message – one I believe everyone should hear.

Spoiler alert…if you haven’t read the book, Lucado expresses this message much more eloquently than I do, so I would recommend reading it. 🙂

In You Are Special, wooden people called the Wemmicks are the stars of the story. All day, the Wemmicks gave each other stickers, shiny golden stars and gray dots. If you had many stars, you were seen as a valuable Wemmick; if you had many dots, you were looked down upon.

A certain Wemmick named Punchinello always received circle stickers. Because of this, people told him that he wasn’t worth much. He even started to believe them. When he was at his lowest point, Punchinello decided to visit Eli, the woodworker who created the Wemmicks.

Eli looked at the circle stickers covering Punchinello, who apologized for all of his circle stickers. Eli said, “I don’t care what the other Wemmicks think…you shouldn’t either. Who are they to give stars or dots? They’re Wemmicks just like you. What they think doesn’t matter, Punchinello. All that matters is what I think. And I think you are pretty special.” Punchinello questioned why Eli thought he was special even though he was flawed, and Eli told Punchinello, “Because you’re mine. That’s why you matter to me.”

Then Eli said something that would change Punchinello’s life forever: “The stickers only stick if they matter to you. The more you trust my love, the less you care about their stickers…you are special because I made you. And I don’t make mistakes.”

Just like the Wemmicks, we live in a city of stars and circles. All day long, people can build us up and tear us down. And just like Punchinello, we have a Maker, our loving Heavenly Father. He loves us just the way we are, regardless of the stars and circles other people might give us. He loves us because we are His. You are valuable, even priceless, in His eyes – always remember that!

“If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.

If He had a wallet, your picture would be in it.

He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.

Face it, friend. He is crazy about you!”
